A stupid Yank.
I found this article on ACP Journal
American doctors report in a journal about a man who poisoned himself with bromide. The reason was a tip from ChatGPT to save salt.
An otherwise healthy man became a case for inpatient psychiatry. The reason was a supposed tip from ChatGPT. The 60-year-old’s goal was to save salt (sodium chloride). The artificial intelligence suggested sodium bromide as a substitute, which he took for a period of three months. Taking sodium bromide can cause bromism. Doctors from Washington reported on this in the journal “ACP Journals.”
Man begins self-experiment and ends up in the hospital
The man stated that he distilled his own water. “He was very thirsty but paranoid about water being offered to him,” the researchers explained in the report. After analyzing the lab results, the doctors suspected bromism.
Twenty-four hours after admission, he exhibited “increasing paranoia as well as auditory and visual hallucinations,” which led to involuntary psychiatric admission. These are signs of bromism. After a three-week hospital stay, the patient’s symptoms improved.
Symptoms of Bromism
DocCheck Flexikum reports the following symptoms of bromism:
- Sedation
- Dizziness
- Memory loss
- Hallucinations
Sodium bromide was previously contained in sedatives and antiepileptic drugs, for example, according to Chemical Europe. However, it is no longer approved due to side effects such as neurological disorders and symptoms of poisoning.
