I hate to scare or to discourage you because I don't know how good you know the living standard in the "so-called" developed world. You know, the living standard is like a boat on ocean. It rises and sinks with the flood or the ebb. Can you imagine that in the EU or in the States that poverty is when one has an income lower than 20000 US$/year ? A big Mac, for example, costs in Germany or France ca. 8€ (or roughly 9 US$). So is in Japan. If you are aware about such discrepancy then you can go to anywhere. Japan or wherever.
Japan and the EU, the US as well, need "cheap" engineers because they face hard competition from S. Korea and, especially from China. Indians, Filipinos, etc. fill the gap in the US and the EU. They usually earn less than the locals. And so do Vietnamese who work in Japan. Don't believe in "equality" or "equal status", especially in Japan
